Gold karats are determined by the amount of pure gold in a piece of jewelry or object. Karats are measured on a scale of 24, so 24 karat gold is considered pure gold. The higher the karat, the more pure gold is present, with 18 karat gold containing 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals.
