How many years does it take to create gold?

Gold cannot be created instantaneously here on Earth. Instead, it forms through unique astrophysical processes across unfathomable spans of space and time measured in billions of years. The immutable conditions required to forge this precious element will likely never be replicated by mankind. Yet our coveted gold deposits originated eons ago and light-years away within the cosmos.

Estimates based on computer models indicate the gold present in the Earth’s crust was likely created from four to six billion years ago during the violent aftermath of neutron star collisions. These spectacular cosmic events released enormous amounts of energy in what scientists speculate was a key source of many heavy elements. The extreme densities and temperatures during such collisions enabled rapid neutron to capture by atomic nuclei to create very unstable isotopes. Their subsequent radioactive decay produced new elements, including gold.

Tiny amounts of gold can now be created artificially on Earth using particle accelerators by bombarding mercury or platinum with high-energy neutrons. But the gold isotopes formed this way have different atomic masses than natural gold. They also decay radioactively within days. Only the unique conditions of neutron star mergers could have forged stable gold isotopes through intense neutron flux bombardment billions of years ago.

This primordial gold was scattered into space when the neutron stars exploded as supernovae. Over billions of years, dispersed gold coalesced with interstellar gas clouds that later collapsed to form our solar system. Gold became incorporated into the swirling disc of dust and gasses around the young Sun that eventually accreted into planets. Much of the Earth’s gold may have arrived even later through an epoch of meteorite impacts.

While we cannot recreate gold’s origins, this ancient stardust holds fascination and value for our technological civilization today. Each gold atom passes between nebulae, stars, and planets across incomprehensible voids before arriving in a precious vein. Yet Earth’s limited gold will unlikely ever be replenished since the cosmic forces that birthed it abated long ago.
